Singer Justin Carter has died in an accidental shooting. The rising country music star was killed by a gun that was being used as a music video prop, according to Houston’s ABC 11. Carter’s death was confirmed on his Instagram page.
The Texas native signed a deal with Triple Threat Management just days before his death.
“Justin had a potential to, you know, in our eyes, and a lot of people’s eyes, to be the next Garth Brooks,” Triple Threat’s Mark Atherton told ABC 11.
Atherton said a gun that was going to be used for the music video shoot was the same one that ultimately killed Carter at his apartment. Other details are unknown at this time.
“His music was his world,” Carter’s mother, Cindy McClellan, added. “He was always there for everybody.”
According to Carter’s bio on his Facebook page, he was a “Texas raised country boy to his core,” drawing inspiration from Clay Walker, Garth Brooks and George Strait.
“Justin’s passion is derived from the sound of old country, and he clings to that feeling he gets when he hears it and tries to push that into his music,” the bio reads. “Times are changing and so are the generations taste in music, but Justin tries to keep a happy medium between both old and new to satisfy everyone.”
Triple Threat plans on releasing the rest of Carter’s music with the proceeds going to his family, who are also collecting donations for burial expenses.
Carter released the music video for his song “Love Affair” one week ago and was finishing up a new solo album.
