Missing woman’s husband arrested after her remains are found

The husband of a California mother who vanished earlier this summer was taken into custody after human remains believed to belong to the missing woman were discovered.

Anthony John Gumina, 44, was arrested on an outstanding no-bail warrant for domestic violence on Sept. 6 amid the months-long search for his wife, 33-year-old Heather Waters Gumina, according to the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office.

At the same time, detectives conducting a search warrant at an undisclosed property in the Pleasant Valley area of El Dorado County found what they believe to be Heather’s remains.

Following the discovery, Gumina was arrested and is currently being held on suspicion of felony domestic violence and first-degree murder, according to online jail records.

Heather and her vehicle, a 2005 black Infiniti coupe with pink bow stickers, were both reported missing on July 16, shortly after the mother of three was released from the hospital due to a broken collarbone, CNN reports.

On Aug. 9, police announced that the missing mother’s car had been discovered in El Dorado County and was in the process of being forensically processed for evidence.

The victim’s mother, Joanna Russel, previously told KTXL she knew something was wrong, as her daughter would never willingly leave her children, aged 4, 10 and 14, behind with no contact.

“Every minute of the day I feel like dying inside,” Russell said amid the search for Heather. “I feel like dying because I didn’t protect her. I didn’t protect her.”

Authorities on Sept. 7 confirmed the missing person case had officially transitioned into a homicide investigation. No further information was released at the time.

Following the tragic news, Heather’s mother spoke out again, remembering her daughter as “one of the most giving, loyal people I’ve ever known.”

“I don’t know if we’re ever going to be OK,” she told KTXL. “I miss my daughter.”

“I’m going to grieve for a very long time,” she added. “It’s like the world’s worst nightmare.”
