Now, soon after announcing that Season 7 will only be seven episodes long, HBO’s new president of programming, Casey Bloys, at the TCA summer press tour today, revealed that Season 8 will in fact be the show’s final run.
Asked if he could confirm Season 8 would be the last, as Benioff and Weiss have often said they intended, Bloys replied, “Yes. They have a very specific plan about the number of seasons they want to do. As the new guy coming in, I’d take 10 more seasons, but we take their lead.”
While Season 7 is confirmed as seven episodes, in terms of how many episodes for the final season, Bloys said, “For the 8th season, I’m not sure yet. The guys are still thinking about it. They know we’ll take as many as they want to give us.”
As far as a possible spinoff or other continuation, Bloys said, “We’ve talked about it. It’s something I’m not opposed to,” but “There are no concrete plans at this point.”
